It’s clear Capcom and Namco have their plates full with their own fighters Street Fighter V and Tekken 7 have become such service-based games, it’s hard to imagine either would’ve had the same DLC cycles and improvements should developers been distracted by making Tekken X Street Fighter. The FutureĮverything considered, it’s hard to see where Tekken X Street Fighter could possibly fit into the mix, both in past and present. All the while Tekken 7 remains a poster child of success for Namco, and players continue to see DLC five years after release.

Despite a disappointing launch, the game finally reached four million in sales this year, but only after a plethora of free DLC releases helped mend its relationship with players.

Meanwhile, Street Fighter V keeps Capcom’s attention, though even that project saw its own plague of issues from both professional players and casual fans. In fact, it’s hard to think of a single fighting-game crossover involving names with the same large-scale recognition as Street Fighter or Tekken that’s actually worked in the past five years. (They also seem to be developing their franchises one at a time like Namco, staggering the release of each Mortal Kombat and Injustice entry to capture the largest audience possible). DC Universe and split the latter into a separate entry, now the highly-successful Injustice series.

Capcom Infinite was met with lukewarm reception and even worse sales. NetherRealm Studios learned from their fumble with Mortal Kombat vs. Ryu, Ken, and heck, even SNK’s Terry Bogard can all brawl in Ultimate already. On the crossover-genre front, things don’t look so healthy. Ultimate, as Tekken‘s Kazuya was announced as the next roster spot during Nintendo’s E3 2021 Direct. Still, Tekken 7 got its Akuma guest spot, and soon you’ll be able to recreate Tekken X Street Fighter within Super Smash Bros. It was confirmed that the project was on hold in 2016, and this seems to be the final confirmation that it’s over, and Harada says as much on stream: “We wanted to show it but the project died.” Rumors of Tekken X Street Fighter‘s development have bounced around for some time now, as the game was announced back in 2010. You can see some of the work reflected in Akuma’s guest spot on the roster in Tekken 7 “we even had motions, which you can see reflected in Akuma,” said Harada. There’s more discussion of how excited they were to show their takes on various characters, especially the female characters, and that Dhalsim also apparently came out very well. “Yeah, development stopped but we got about 30% done,” he said. Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada discussed Tekken X Street Fighter, the Bandai Namco side of the crossover, on a recent Harada’s Bar Radio stream with Tekken 7 game director Kouhei Ikeda. There were plans to do the same crossover from the Tekken side, but it sounds like those can finally be put to rest. In 2012, fighting game franchises Street Fighter and Tekken crossed over in a Capcom-developed crossover Street Fighter X Tekken.

“Well, the fact that the status has not changed is not a nice thing for us and for you.” “In any case, the status is not much different from the status I told you about before,” wrote Harada. He also clears up some translations around concept art and collaboration, and again confirms that the project has been “put in storage” for the time being, and for now they are just waiting for the “right opportunity.” He says the quote is more similar to phrasing they’ve used before around Tekken x Street Fighter, that “up to 30% of development was in progress, but now it is still pending.” Harada took to Twitlonger to clarify a misunderstanding in how the subtitles were worded. [ Update: It looks like hopes may not be dead after all.
